| Frequently Asked Questions: In order to help you to better understand our services, we present some of the most frequently asked questions: I've never boarded my dog before, will he be OK? How well your dog does during his stay at any kennel depends not only upon the kennel environment but also upon his/her attitude towards people, age, past experience with being boarded, and how well he/she responds to being away from a familiar home environment. Does my dog need to have shots? How old does my dog have to be? All dogs entering the kennel must be fully inoculated. (proof required upon arrival) All puppies must be at least 4 months old and must have had at least 2 shots in the puppy series of inoculations. Rabies vaccination is required by state law for all dogs. The combination vaccine commonly known as "distemper" actually protects your dog against five or six viral diseases, including canine distemper and parvovirus. This vaccine is required, since these diseases can be life-threatening to un-vaccinated dogs. Bordetella or kennel cough vaccination is particularly vital for all dogs in a boarding or day care situation since the infection is airborne and quite common where dogs are housed together. We recommend inoculations be given at least 10 days prior to boarding. Please check with your veterinarian to be sure your dog is current on all recommended vaccinations prior to boarding. Please notify us if your dog has been in the dog pound within the previous 10 days.Do I need a reservation to leave my dog? Yes. To be sure there is a place for your dog, please make a reservation. If you change your plans and will not be bringing your dog, please call at any time and leave a message on the kennel answering machine. If you notify us, we can give your reservation to another client who may have been turned away because the kennel was full. We maintain a waiting list and will try to call a client on the list if there is a cancellation. When can I bring my dog? Please bring your dog during our Office Hours. Why do you have such weird hours? It is our philosophy, after many years of taking care of animals in a boarding situation, that dogs thrive on a routine. They are happier when they know what to expect and when to expect it. Dogs also need to sleep. Our routine, which dogs learn quickly, includes quiet time when they can sleep. Early each morning the kennels are cleaned, animals are fed, medications given and the dogs are walked. 8-10 AM animals are checked in and out. This is an exciting time for the dogs. At 10:00 AM the lights in the kennel are turned off and everybody quiets down to sleep. This quiet time to sleep helps reduce the stress level for the animals. The dogs are checked on during the day. At 4:00 PM the lights are turned back on and everybody is awake for the evening check in/out. The animals are also fed, medications given and dogs walked in the evenings. Then it's lights out again. The animals are checked again during the evening. We sincerely feel that limiting the hours the kennel is open to the public is in the best interest of the dogs and cats in our care. We have found the best way to relieve stress in boarded dogs and cats is to keep them warm and dry and let them sleep. If you watch your dog or cat at home you will notice how much sleep they need. We want our guests to go home happy and well rested. How big is the dog run? Will my dog be in a cage? All of the dog runs are the same size. The only difference in the large and small runs is the size of the door that the dog uses to access the outside run. The inside area is 3 foot by 3 foot. The inside area has cement walls and there is no contact between the dogs. Each run has a top where each dogs belongings are put (food, medications, treats, leash etc.) The gates are made of chain link and the floors are cement. (Sorry, our floors are NOT heated) Each inside run has access to an outside run, which measures 3 foot by 6 foot. The outside runs are covered with a roof, so the dogs are protected from the weather but can still go outside. The entire kennel is enclosed and all outside doors are ALWAYS locked for security. All dogs have free access to indoor/outdoor areas 24 hours a day. Dogs are NEVER locked in crates. Will you walk my dog? Yes. We offer walks for an additional charge of $1.00 per walk. You can request the number of walks you would like when you check your dog in. Length of the walk depends on the breed, age and health of the dog and also the weather. Some little dogs are happy with a short walk on the lawn, while larger dogs might want to walk down the road. We always use our own collars and leashes to assure security on walks. What do you feed the dogs? Can I bring my own food? Will my dog have water? We feed the dogs Iams mini chunk (it comes in the green bag) this is a high quality food. This food is included... there is NO extra charge. If you would prefer to bring your own food, or food in addition, to the dry we offer, that is fine. We will make sure your dog is fed according to your instructions. We have a refrigerator for canned foods. All dogs have fresh water available 24 hours a day. You are welcome to bring treats. Will you give my dog his medicine? Yes. We will give your dog required medications for no extra charge. Sorry, we do NOT give injections. What will you do if my dog gets sick? Please leave an emergency number (your cell phone or a trusted friend that knows how to reach you) when you check your dog in for his stay. In case there is an emergency we will contact you. If we feel your dog needs a veterinarian during his visit, we will contact your vet or bring your dog to one of several vets readily available in our area. Do I have to sign a contract? Yes. Upon admission for services, your signature of contract acknowledges your awareness and acceptance of our policies. You may stop by the kennel office and take a copy of the contract home if you would like to read it over. Can I bring my dog's bed? Can you wash it if it gets dirty? Yes. You can bring any bedding your dog likes. We would prefer something washable. The kennel is equipped with a washer and dryer and we try very hard to keep all of the bedding clean and dry. Our favorite dog bedding is polar fleece. You can buy it by the yard, in many colors, at Jo-Anns, Hancocks and even Walmart. It washes well and is warm for your dog. Will my dog be with other dogs? Will there be cats? Your dog will be housed in an individual dog run. Dogs are never housed together unless an owner has two dogs and wants them together. Your dog may be able to see a dog across the isle, but there is no direct contact between the dogs. The cats are housed in a separate building. There is no contact between dogs and cats. Can I see where my dog will be staying? Yes. Tours are always welcome during Office Hours. No one is allowed to walk the kennel property without being accompanied. During tours parents are asked to take the hand of their children. All children must be quiet and supervised while on kennel property. Please do not stick your fingers in the runs. How do I pay? Payment can be made by personal check or cash only. Sorry, No credit or debit cards. Is the kennel heated? Do you have AC? The kennel is heated. It stays nice and warm in the winter. The kennel does NOT have AC. Fans are used, if needed, during the summer. The dogs are checked on often to make sure they are comfortable. Why do you have music playing in the kennel? We feel that most dogs are used to some "background noise" from their homes as most people usually have a t.v. or radio playing at home. We feel this may help reduce stress for some house dogs. Should I bring my dog's dishes? Can I bring my dog's toys? Can I bring bones? Treats? We can provide stainless steel dishes. If you prefer to bring your own dishes, that is fine, We prefer metal or plastic, something that won't break. You are welcome to bring toys, treats or rawhide bones for your dog. Do I need to leave my collar and leash? You are welcome to leave your collar and leash. We will use kennel collars and leashes if we take your dog out of his run. For your dog's safety, all chain collars and all choke collars are removed. Some buckle collars may also be removed if we have any concerns. Please keep your dog on leash when arriving/leaving the kennel. Can I call and check on my dog? Yes. Feel free to call, during our Office Hours, to check on your dog. My dog bites, will you take him? All dogs must be non-aggressive toward other dogs and humans. It is very important that your dog can be handled. In case your dog becomes sick, we need to be able to handle the dog to properly care for him/her. |
